Project description

The project in detail.

Hepburn Architects developed this concept for the sensitive extension and remodelling of a traditional rural farmhouse.

The proposal introduces a new pitched-roof pavilion connected to the existing house by a lower, glazed link. The form takes inspiration from the proportions and agricultural character of traditional barns, while large areas of glazing establish a clearly contemporary architectural language.

The principal gable elevation opens the new living space towards the garden, bringing natural light deep into the interior and creating a strong visual connection between the house and its rural setting. The open-plan accommodation is arranged beneath a vaulted ceiling, providing a generous kitchen, dining and family space suitable for modern family life.

Natural stone, vertical timber cladding, dark-framed glazing and a slate-toned roof provide a restrained material palette that complements the existing farmhouse without attempting to imitate it.

Design Approach

The design was developed around a clear distinction between old and new. The original stone farmhouse remains the dominant historic element, while the extension adopts a simpler, contemporary form influenced by rural agricultural buildings.

A lightweight glazed connection provides separation between the two elements and helps preserve the legibility of the original house. The new extension is positioned to maximise garden views, natural daylight and the relationship between internal and external living spaces.
