Contemporary Rear Extension to a Period Home

This project transforms the rear of a traditional detached home with a carefully detailed contemporary extension. The design introduces generous areas of glazing, slim dark-framed doors and a restrained charcoal exterior that contrasts confidently with the original brickwork.

The extension creates a strong connection between the house and garden, bringing natural light deep into the plan and providing a flexible open-plan space for cooking, dining and family life. Wide glazed openings allow the principal rooms to flow directly onto a new landscaped terrace, making the garden feel like a natural continuation of the interior.

The contemporary addition remains visually subordinate to the original house, allowing the character and proportions of the existing building to remain clearly understood. Its simple horizontal form and refined material palette give the extension a calm, architectural appearance without competing with the traditional property above.

Design Approach

The design balances contemporary living with the architectural character of the existing home. A low-profile flat roof reduces the visual impact of the extension, while full-height glazing maximises views and daylight.

Dark cladding and slim-framed glazing create a clear distinction between old and new. Internally, the reconfigured layout provides clearly defined kitchen, dining and relaxation areas while maintaining an open and connected family space.
