Apartment Scheme
An illustrative concept for a contemporary apartment development on an urban infill site in Birmingham. The study explores how a medium-density residential scheme could respond positively to an established streetscape while delivering well-proportioned new homes, an active ground floor and a distinctive architectural identity. Warm red and buff brickwork reflects the material character of Birmingham’s residential neighbourhoods. Deep window reveals, recessed balconies and a carefully set-back upper floor give the elevations depth and reduce the apparent scale of the building.

The project in detail.
The design approach
The building is arranged to define the street corner and establish a clear relationship with the surrounding urban fabric. Its principal elevations are divided into a series of vertical bays, helping the larger apartment building relate to the proportions and rhythm of neighbouring properties.
Recessed balconies provide private external space without dominating the façade. Generous windows bring daylight into the apartments, while the more lightweight upper level reduces the building’s visual mass and creates opportunities for roof terraces and integrated planting.
At ground-floor level, the entrance is designed as a clearly identifiable and welcoming part of the street. Landscaping, defensible space and active rooms facing the pavement help establish a comfortable transition between the public realm and residents’ homes.

A successful apartment scheme must balance development capacity with its effect on neighbours, streetscape and local character.

- Daylight and outlook
- Privacy and overlooking
- Private and shared amenity space
- Accessible entrances and ground-floor homes
- Secure cycle and refuse storage

The proposal demonstrates how thoughtful massing and material selection can support a commercially viable residential development without relying on excessive scale or a generic architectural response.
